Onderstaand erg interessant artikel heb ik integraal overgenomen van de website www.grenswetenschap.nl, een erg leuke site met veelal verrassende nieuwsitems, die veelal niet in de reguliere media te vinden zijn. Zelf verbaas ik mij er enorm over hoe weinig aandacht er voor de gigantische olieramp in de Golf van Mexico is. Iedereen wordt nu maar een beetje in slaap gesust door de verkiezingen/formatie en het WK Voetbal, terwijl een van de ergst milieurampen uit onze geschiedenis zich aan het voltrekken is. Tijd om wakker te worden…
Oliecalypse Now
Wij van GW zijn al heel wat gewend wanneer het gaat om apocalyptische scenario’s die de wereld bedreigen. Meestal konden we daar zelf ook wel om lachen. Dit keer is het een ander verhaal. De olieramp in de golf is een ramp die zijn weerga niet kent en die regelrecht uit het boek der openbaringen geplukt lijkt te zijn. Naast de haast niet te bevatten schaal van de catastrofe blijkt er ook nog een heel vies luchtje van voorkennis aan deze zaak te kleven.
Stand van zaken
Twee maanden na het zinken van het Deepwater Horizon olieboorplatform blijkt dit een grotere ramp te zijn dan een nucleaire bom. Na het jammerlijk mislukken van Operatie Top Kill zitten de ingenieurs met de handen in het vettig haar. De druk waarmee de olie naar buiten spuit is tientallen malen hoger dan ze technisch kunnen behappen. Wanneer je diep in de oceaan door een kilometers brede aardlaag heen een onder enorme druk staand gigantisch oliereservoir aanboort wil je daar niet de controle over verliezen. En dat is precies wat er nu gebeurd is.
Het oliereservoir dat nu de oceaan in spuit is het tweede grootste olieveld ter wereld: 25.000 vierkante mijl. Genoeg voor 500.000 vaten olie per dag en dat tien jaar lang. Als de onder druk staande Peak Oil-theorie tenminste waar is, want olie komt niet uitsluitend van dinoplantenpap zoals men op school leert. Wanneer dit inderdaad een migratiekanaal is zoals de Rus Vladimir Kutchenov beweert dan is de toevoer theoretisch gezien oneindig.
Ondertussen worden miljoenen liters corexit 9500 in de golf gepompt om de olie te verspreiden. Dit spul is vier keer giftiger dan de olie zelf. Het enige effect dat het heeft is dat de olie iets onder het wateroppervlak daalt. Goede zaak voor BP want dan wordt het probleem minder zichtbaar. Slechte zaak voor u en ik want het geneesmiddel is stukken erger dan de kwaal! Verder schijnen er ook nog allerlei enge chemicaliën met de olie mee naar boven te komen.
Het wordt steeds waarschijnlijker dat er meerdere lekken zijn en er een ondergrondse blowout plaatsgevonden heeft. Alle signalen zijn er dat de ware omvang van de ramp nog lang niet bekend is. BP heeft er natuurlijk ook niets mee te winnen door de exacte details vrij te geven aangezien de wereld en politiek nu al lynchklaar staat.
De kust van Louisiana is al een zwarte drab en de eerste evacuatieplannen voor Tampa Bay in Florida liggen al klaar. Zaterdag 19 juni wordt er een noodtop gehouden, georganiseerd door lokale activisten en wetenschappers. Concrete oplossingen kunnen ze niet meteen bieden en meer dan ooit vullen praatjes geen gaatjes.
Oplossing?
Momenteel vestigt BP de hoop op de relief wells, maar ook deze noodgreep lijkt niet veel effect te hebben. De enige andere oplossing is een atoombom. In Rusland hebben ze in het verleden al meerdere malen dit soort olielekken op deze manier gedicht. Door de hitte van de explosie zou het gesteente de gaten dicht smelten. Een belangrijke verschil is dat dat steeds op land in afgelegen gebieden plaatsvond. Een nuke in de golf zou natuurlijk desastreuze gevolgen hebben voor het zeeleven daar, maar dat zal sowieso geen schijn van kans hebben als het lek niet gedicht wordt. Mocht de bom het gewenste effect niet hebben en de oceaanbodem verder openrijten dan weten we zeker dat we de pineut zijn. Niet dat we willen doemdenken, maar een atoombom staat nu niet meteen bekend omwille van diens chirurgische precisie.
Toekomst?
Het is natuurlijk onmogelijk te zeggen hoe deze situatie zich precies verder zal ontwikkelen. Wanneer we geluk hebben is het lek snel gedicht en blijft de schade beperkt tot de Golf van Mexico. Het zal dan wel enige tientallen jaren duren voor de troep is opgeruimd en het ecosysteem enigszins is hersteld, maar het blijft het best case scenario.
Het absolute worst case scenario is gewoonweg het einde van alle leven op aarde. Dit klinkt overdreven, maar het is helaas niet ondenkbaar. Oceaanleven heeft zuurstof nodig en de olielaag laat geen zuurstof door. Wanneer de olie blijft stromen zullen de vissen onherroepelijk sterven. Wanneer de oceanen dood zijn kunnen wij het op land zeer zeker ook wel vergeten.
Een meer behapbaar worst case scenario is dat ’slechts’ de gehele oostkust van de VS een onleefbare chemische dump zal worden. Als het zover komt kunnen we hier ook al vast ons oliepak aantrekken: de vervuiling drijft naar de atlantische oceaan en zal via de warme golfstroom ook onze kant opkomen. Laten we hopen, duimen en bidden dat we geen worst case zullen meemaken en in de toekomst om dit blog kunnen lachen.
De toekomst ziet er niet rooskleurig uit. Feit is dat er dit jaar een heftig orkaanseizoen voorspeld is. Wat er gebeurt als een orkaan eerst over de olievlek gaat en daarna het vaste land bereikt is nu nog slechts speculatie. Reken alvast niet op mooie regenbogen met snoepjesaroma.
Verdachte Voorkennis?
In de weken voor de ramp waren er enkele opmerkelijke transacties in de financiële wereld. Zo verkocht Goldman Sachs 44% van zijn aandelen BP, UBS 97% en Wachovia zelfs 98% van hun aandelen BP. Naast deze ‘toevalligheden’ is er ook nog het beruchte Halliburton die als aannemer op het olieplatform actief was en 8 dagen voor de ramp het gerenommeerde olierampbestrijdingsbedrijf Boots heeft & Coots inc. heeft aangekocht. In 60 minutes vertelt Mike Williams (electro-ingenieur en overlevende) dat enkele weken voor de ramp een belangrijke veiligheidsklep defect was gegaan. Toevallig?
Voor de mensen die nog een alu-hoedje in de kast hebben liggen: dit filmpje voorspelde in 2008 een false flag in de Golf van Mexico en de datum, 20 april, doet natuurlijk ook alarmbellen rinkelen.
Mediastilte
Aan de kust van Louisiana gebeuren gekke dingen. Er worden cameraploegen tegengehouden en zelfs mensen gearresteerd die foto’s maken. Er is een campagne aan de gang om de werkelijke ernst van de ramp te verdoezelen. Wordt dus ongetwijfeld vervolgd…

It’s time to wake up.
As mentioned before (http://adelweyn.com/?p=483), the European Central Bank has one last option to win the confidence of the financial markets: to buy debts of membership-countries. However, this so-called nucleair option can easily lead to inflation, since the only way the ECB can purchase these debts, is by increasing the amount of euros, which means: to print new money. And more money means more inflation, that’s just basic economy.
By the way: have you ever realised what the consequences are of increasing money all the time? Have you ever questioned, why prices always go up? Do you think that’s logical? Don’t you think this is done on purpose, so you have some feeling of fear which makes you stick to your job that only increases your salary just a tiny bit, often hardly enough to cope with inflation itself? Once you realise how the financial system really works, you will find out you’re just a modern slave…Anyway, that’s something I will focus on some other time. Let’s go back to the ECB and the euro.
Less than 2 weeks ago I told you that ECB-president Trichet was really not considering the option of purchasing national debts.
Only 3 days later he had to admit, there was no other option left: http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/may/10/european-debt-crisis-bailout, although now he stressed out that this will not lead to inflation, since “all additional liquidity injected into the financial system will be withdrawn”. How does this work? Money created, money injected, money withdrawn? Then what has happened exactly?
However today German Reichschancellor Angela Merkel said: “the euro is in danger” http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSBAT00547220100519
Both Merkel and Trichet urged the European governments to act quick and to cut national costs rapidly and more firmly than has been done so far.
Probably this will lead to more dramatic savings than the € 29 billion our national savings-commissions have foreseen.
With just some weeks till the elections and with a very instable euro and even more instable financial markets, these are interesting times.
An article by Niall Ferguson in Foreign Affairs discusses the rise and fall of great empires (http://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/65987/niall-ferguson/complexity-and-collapse). Ferguson is historican connected to Harvard, to Oxford University and the Hoover institute of Stanford University. In his article ‘Complexity and Collapse’ Ferguson studies the lifecycle of great empires that again and again show a certain pattern: they rise, they are powerful and they fall to ultimately just disappear. Fergusons thesis is, after analysing the world history from the Roman empire, until the Soviet Union: that collapse comes very quickly and completely unexpected.
He gives nice examples of events that look like incidents (the gunshot in Sarajevo that started WW1, or the attacks on the World Trade Centre). But those who look closely afterwards, see something different: a lot earlier fatal developments started and in that one crucial incident many different things all came together to manifest big changes.
Our highly developed, complex society is very sensitive for little disruptions and when something is not working properly anymore, chaos is imminemt.
At the end, the author focusses on the United States and he is very gloomy. The US is in big financial problems, and every major empire that ever collapsed, suffered the same problems. Furthermore, the military obligations of the US are much too expensive and much too big. Together, all these things form the perfect ingredients for a decline. And that decline will just suddenly appear, completely unexpected.

Today I spoke with a refugee from Iraq who left everything he had behind 6 years ago and fled with his wife and children to The Netherlands. It reminded me of the madness of this war and everything that happened before.
It all started with 9/11. I always believed the official story, I believed the US government and our own government.
That all changed 2 years ago. I now consider 9/11 as the biggest cover-up stories of our present time.
When you look at all the information with an open mind, when you really look and listen, you cannot ignore there are so many things we still don’t know, to say the least.
And the government isn’t trying very hard to get the truth out in the open.
Soon on this site, the reasons why I changed my mind.
How I discovered that every mayor war of the last 50 years has been sold to the public based on lies, deception, fraud and manipulation.
And remember, it’s not the bad people who do real harm.
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
If all means to end the financiel crisis fail, the European Central Bank still has one last weapon, which the financial markets call the “nucleair option”, according to The Washington Post.

That option is that the debts from countries in trouble, will be bought by the ECB itself. This would immediately end all speculation about the value of those debts, which is a huge benefit.
However, there is a downside to this. The ECB buys these debts with euros, that have to be printed to solve the problems. And more euros on the markets will lead to inflation. Which could eventually lead to a situation in Europe that happened before in the ’20s and ’30s. ECB-president Trichet therefor insisted that he doesn’t consider the option of using the nucleair option. But, as The Washington Post reflects, he probably means he is not considering this option now. With a weakening euro, de-stabilising financiel markets, and increasing worries about the debts of countries like Greece, Spain and Portugal, there might come a moment he doesn’t have any other options left.
It’ll be suicide probably. And, as I mentioned before, I am not ruling out the possibility of violent consequences. Europe’s history is written in blood. It doesn’t look like we’ve learned from it enough, yet.
Be aware. But don’t be afraid. Fear is a bad adviser.
Buckle up your seatbelts, it’s gonna be a rough ride…
